I recently had the pleasure of doing a photowalk with one of my favorite photogs, Trey Ratcliff. Photography has been a recent obsession of mine and I am by all accounts a noob to the photographic space. So when I stumbled upon Trey’s blog Stuck in Customs I was in heaven! There are so many phenomenal tuts, photographs, and videos on photography, gear, and software…a must visit! He also rocks a pretty legit podcast called Trey’s Variety Hour. So when I found out he was doing a G+ photowalk here in Austin for SXSW (South by Southwest for the uninitiated) I was ecstatic!
The photowalk started at City Hall and went all the way to dirty sixth ending at The Hilton. I had an incredible time meeting everyone and was especially excited that I could conversate with Trey one on one if only for a couple minutes. He is one of the most genuine people I have ever met, but just watch a few of his tutorials or podcasts and you will see what I mean. Everyone else was also really friendly and fun. The most intriguing part of the photowalk for me was the wide spectrum of skill/gear, some people were walking around with D4’s with uber expensive glass and some people were shooting with smartphones, which I thought was really cool. There wasn’t any condescending looks from people with pro-grade gear everyone was all about creating art. I think this type of atmosphere is the most conducive to learning and partying ;).
Just an FYI I shoot a Sony NEX-5N and love it
One of my favorite meets of the whole photowalk was an incredibly vivacious and sensational photog named Lotus Carroll 100% recommend you check her out. She is nothing short of awesome! Also met a couple spectacular gals from Google, Natalie Villalobos and Lisa Donchak that were wearing Google Glass, which looked like the real deal! Lisa, Natalie hook a brother up 😉
Photowalks are a lot of fun and even better when you are around a bunch of stellar photogs! I look forward to many more and if you are in the Austin area here is a cool community on Google+ that I just joined – Drink and Click ATX.
I grabbed a few interesting shots you can check them out here.
